Ph.D Research

The operating temperature of nickel-based superalloys is reaching its limit due to the restriction from the superalloys melting temperature. In order to further increase the operating temperature of the engine combustion tecnnology, new generation of ultrahigh temperature structural materials are needed. Alloys in Mo-Si-B family offer many advantages over other advance materials. A balance of toughness, oxidation resistance, and creep resistance is sought from various mixtures of metal and silicide phases. We are at the forefront of innovation to solve the mystery of the oxidation behaviors of the Mo-Si-B alloys. With leading edge understanding of the alloy behaviors, we hope to engineer their properties on the molecular level to achieve the desire behaviors.  The resulting success will no doubt revolutionize the high-temperature superalloys industry.
